History

of Our Church

On August 8, 1903, Bishop Thomas J. Conaty announced that a new parish named after Saint Patrick would be built in Los Angeles, in an area then known as the Vernon District.  Just two weeks after this announcement, the first mass of Saint Patrick Parish was celebrated at Pierce Hall, a small public hall on Central and Vernon Avenues.  The parochial population at this point was approximately 300.

Humble Beginnings

On September 11, 1904, the parish school building was dedicated and the first mass was celebrated in its lower hall.  By this time the population of the parish had grown to over 1,000.  The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet began teaching at the school that fall.  Several students at St. Patrick Church later became priests, sisters or brothers.  Joseph t. McGucken, who completed his elementary school grades, made his first Holy Communion, was Confirmed, also an altar boy at St. Patrick's, later became Archbishop.

On March 17, 1906, the cornerstone of the futute parish was laid.  The church which had a capacity of 750 and cost $50,000 to build, was opened for public use in the spring of 1907.  Due to delays in the arrival of the stained-glass windows, Bishope Conaty did not dedicate the church until March 1908.  On March 10, 1933, an earthquake destroyed twoo of the three church spires.

A new school was built next to the original one in 1950 and blessed on February 4, 1951.  For some time, the first floor of the "old" school continued to be used as a meeting hall and youth center.  This older structure was hazed in 1959, after it was declared unsafe and a fire hazard.  In the early 1970's, the parish school was merged with that of St. Odilia. The new school building has since been used for parish meetings and religion classes.

Growing Through Change

St. Patrick experienced another structural change in 1971, when a strong earthquake hit the Los Angeles area.  The church, which was severely damaged in 1933, was declared unsafe and subsequently demolished.  Without a church the parish was in danger of closing. However, with the same resourcefulness that it had demonstrated during its early years, St. Patrick parish continued to serve the community by using what had once been the school cafeteria.
